On Monday, Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, affirmed that the automated passport application process would be commencing operations on January 8, 2024. This follows the minister's earlier announcement in December, emphasizing the Federal Government's commitment to achieving a fully automated system for passport applications in Nigeria.
He added that the initiative will improve the security architecture of the country, prompting a quick detection of fake passport applications and reducing bottlenecks.
During an inspection of Nigeria Immigration Service facilities in Abuja alongside Comptroller General Wura-Ola Adepoju, Minister Tunji-Ojo confirmed that the upcoming automation would enable Nigerians to apply for and complete their passport applications online, eliminating the need for in-person interactions.
Highlighting the progress made, the minister mentioned that the training process leading to the official launch of the automation had commenced. He re-affirmed that the solution would go live on January 8, offering Nigerians a seamless and contact-free experience in line with the vision of Mr. President.
He said, “We are good to go live. We are starting the training and on January 8, the solution will be live and direct for Nigerians to have a good feel, a sweet experience based on the Renewed Hope of Mr President. “We have been able to reduce human contact in passport acquisition to the minimum.”
Tunji-Ojo emphasized the reduction of human contact in the passport acquisition process, promoting efficiency. Furthermore, he noted that the initiative aimed to enhance the country's security architecture by enabling quicker detection of fraudulent passport applications and streamlining the overall application process.
