Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State issues a directive to dismantle illegal brothels and criminal hideouts notorious for illicit activities, including prostitution and gangsterism, within 72 hours.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State has mandated the swift demolition of all unauthorized brothels and criminal dens within the state, known for fostering activities such as prostitution and gangsterism. The directive was given during his visit to the 'Bayan Quarters' area in Maiduguri, which has gained notoriety for housing such establishments.
Once serving as residences for railway staff during the peak days of the Nigeria Railway Corporation, these buildings have now become hotspots for criminal elements and underage individuals involved in commercial sex work.
Governor Zulum expressed deep concern about the surge in criminal undertakings associated with these illicit establishments, encompassing prostitution, drug trafficking, and other unlawful operations. He highlighted that these activities not only pose a security threat to the state but also perpetuate social issues that erode the well-being of communities and the dignity of those involved.
The Governor clarified that while the settlement, known for harboring criminals and underage girls engaged in commercial sex work, will be razed within 72 hours, the illegal brothels have a 12-hour window to vacate.
He stated, "The government has been duly informed of the activities that are going on here; this settlement is completely illegal. People are killed here, this place serves as a breeding space for insurgents. Therefore, I have directed that everybody should vacate the place."
Governor Zulum additionally announced the revocation of the land title where these criminal activities were being carried out, emphasizing that it was initially sanctioned for use by the Nigerian Railway Corporation.
He explained, "I understand that this land was approved by the Borno State Government to be used by the Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC), but unfortunately, it’s been rented out illegally with all forms of criminal activities taking place. For this reason, the government has revoked the earlier approval and henceforth, the land belongs to Borno State Government."
