Izzy Christiansen weighs in on Arsenal's challenge to stop Chelsea's WSL dominance.

Former footballer Izzy Christiansen believes that Arsenal's premature exit from the Champions League has raised the stakes for them in the Women's Super League (WSL). The Gunners were eliminated in the qualifiers by Paris FC, despite their semifinal run in the previous season.

Christiansen, who now works as a Sky Sports pundit, emphasized that Arsenal, with the absence of Champions League football, will face heightened expectations to clinch their first WSL title since 2018-19. She expressed, "There's a bit of pressure and eyes on Arsenal to win the league."

Reflecting on the Champions League setback, Christiansen noted, "As a player you want to be in the Champions League. I'm sure there's disappointment with that but I think they'll move on quickly. Football doesn't wait for disappointment, you just have to crack on."

While acknowledging Arsenal's impressive campaign last season, she pointed out that injuries hindered their progress. With the current squad depth, Christiansen believes they are better equipped to handle such setbacks.

The pundit also highlighted the challenge for manager Jonas Eidevall in managing a large squad of high-caliber players. She commented, "He's got a big squad of big-level players, so it'll be fascinating to see how that evolves over the season."

Looking ahead to the upcoming WSL season, Christiansen anticipates heightened competition. She predicts that teams outside the traditional top six will have a more significant influence on results. She added, "The game is improving each year... and teams are fitter."

Christiansen emphasized the need for these teams to not only compete but to also secure points in matches against the top sides. She noted that the likes of Aston Villa have made significant strides and are vying for a spot at the top end of the table.

Moreover, teams like Liverpool, Everton, Bristol City, Leicester, West Ham, and Tottenham are expected to play pivotal roles in determining the league's outcome. According to Christiansen, the 2023-24 WSL season is set to be one of the most fiercely contested yet.
