The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HoCSF), Dr. Folasade Yemi-Esan, has issued a compelling appeal to Health Maintenance Organisations (HMOs) across the nation. In a bid to improve the quality and affordability of healthcare delivery for civil servants, Yemi-Esan emphasized the pivotal role that dedicated HMOs could play in reducing the escalating morbidity rate currently experienced.
Speaking during a one-day interactive session with HMOs in Abuja, Yemi-Esan underscored that the well-being of civil servants can no longer be overlooked. She lamented the unfortunate reality of preventable and curable ailments leading to daily fatalities among civil servants. In light of this urgent concern, Yemi-Esan called upon HMOs to take proactive measures in transforming healthcare provision.
Represented by Mahmud Adam Kambari, the Permanent Secretary of the Service Welfare Office, Yemi-Esan implored HMOs to collaborate with the civil service in implementing regular medical check-ups. Additionally, she stressed the importance of furnishing comprehensive healthcare services and quality medications to civil servants, ultimately improving their overall health.
Addressing the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) and the status of retirees, Yemi-Esan sought clarity on the benefits accessible to retired civil servants under the NHIS. She further inquired about the extent of NHIS coverage among current civil servants.
Yemi-Esan directed her call to the National Health Insurance Authority (NHIA), the regulatory body overseeing healthcare in Nigeria. She urged the NHIA to ensure that HMOs are prominently visible and easily accessible to civil servants enrolled in their programs. Many civil servants are reportedly unaware of their designated HMOs, prompting the need for enhanced visibility and information dissemination.
Bola Adeosun, a representative of the civil servants, highlighted the significance of the meeting as a platform for collaboration. The dialogue facilitated interaction among three key stakeholders: civil servants (represented by the HoCSF), HMOs, and the Health Insurance Regulatory Body (NHIA). This alignment aims to address challenges, share insights, and collectively chart a course toward a healthcare system that offers improved affordability, quality, and accessibility to all civil servants.
