A palpable sense of tension enveloped Oji River Local Government Area in Enugu State as news spread about the tragic killing of a truck driver on the Enugu-Onitsha expressway at Ugwuoba. The assailants, suspected to be touts collecting produce fees on behalf of the state government, fatally attacked the driver using a knife around 9:30 a.m. before fleeing the scene.
Reports indicate that the truck had originated from Wukari in Taraba State and was en route to Awka in Anambra State. The confrontation occurred when the truck was intercepted by the touts at Ugwuoba in Oji River council of Enugu State. A heated disagreement escalated into the driver's fatal stabbing.
Following the incident, the truck drivers took action, blocking both the new and old roads for more than two hours, causing disruption for other travelers. One of the drivers stated that they would only unblock the roads when the Enugu State governor or a government representative addresses their concerns.
Expressing frustration, he condemned the ongoing violence perpetrated by touts against their members and stressed that this incident marks a turning point.
“Enough is enough, we can’t accept it any longer. Why must these people be killing our members like chicken everytime? This is not the first, second or third.
“They do kill our people everytime but today marks the end. This road will be blocked until Enugu State governor comes here to address us,” he lamented.
Determined to effect change, the drivers asserted that their demonstration serves as a statement against such violence. They demand justice, accountability, and the end of these senseless killings. The episode highlights the urgent need for a resolution between the truck drivers and the authorities to ensure safe passage for all on these roads.
