Pastor Tunde Bakare

In a fiery and impassioned webinar on Saturday, Pastor Tunde Bakare of the Citadel Global Community Church denounced the 2023 elections as a "mess" and alleged that malpractices had taken place during the electioneering process. Speaking during a Q&A session after his speech on the role of the Diaspora in building a new Nigeria, Bakare declared that he would never recognize Bola Tinubu as his president, despite Tinubu's recent election victory.

"I will address Asiwaju as a President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria," Bakare said, "but I will never call him my president. The 2023 elections were below acceptable standards, and until this mess is cleared off, I cannot in good conscience acknowledge Tinubu as the rightful president of Nigeria."

Bakare, who is both a cleric and a politician, did not participate in the 2023 elections, but his words carry weight in the Nigerian political landscape. He has long been a vocal advocate for electoral reform and good governance, and his criticisms of the current administration have often been blunt and uncompromising.

Some have criticized Bakare's refusal to recognize Tinubu as a divisive and counterproductive stance, but others have praised his courage and integrity in speaking truth to power. Regardless of one's political affiliations, it is clear that Bakare's words will continue to reverberate throughout Nigeria as the country grapples with the aftermath of a deeply contested and controversial election.
