In response to President Bola Tinubu's request for military intervention in Niger, the Senate has urged the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) and other regional leaders to approach the political crisis in Niger Republic with caution.
Following a private session that extended nearly two hours, convened to discuss President Tinubu's letter regarding ECOWAS decisions, the Senate advised ECOWAS to emphasize political and diplomatic strategies, along with alternative methods, to effectively address the political turmoil in Niger Republic.
The Senate, firmly opposing the Niger coup, expressed appreciation for the prompt response and proactive measures taken by ECOWAS Chair President Bola Tinubu and other Heads of State within the ECOWAS community, concerning the distressing events unfolding in Niger Republic.
Senate President Godswill Akpabio, while outlining the Senate's resolutions post-meeting, clarified that President Tinubu's correspondence did not request Senate endorsement for engaging in warfare, contrary to certain misconceptions. Instead, President Tinubu expressed a desire for the National Assembly's support in executing the ECOWAS resolutions outlined in the communication.
The Senate further called upon the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, who also chairs ECOWAS, to inspire fellow ECOWAS leaders in pursuing diplomatic and political avenues to achieve a resolution to the political situation in Niger Republic.
In a move to facilitate the return of democratic governance to Niger, the Senate endorsed the National Assembly's partnership with ECOWAS under President Tinubu's leadership.
With the Senate leadership entrusted to engage directly with the President and Commander in Chief, the Senate aims to collaboratively tackle the issue, considering the historically amicable relationship between the Nigerian and Nigerien populations.
Concluding its stand, the Senate urged the ECOWAS parliament to swiftly denounce the coup and actively contribute to devising solutions for resolving this critical situation.
