Liverpool's star defender Virgil van Dijk finds himself in hot water after receiving a red card and subsequently being charged by the Football Association (FA) for improper conduct. The incident occurred during Liverpool's 2-1 victory against Newcastle at St James' Park.
Van Dijk's frustration with the decision was evident as he vehemently contested referee John Brooks' call to send him off following a foul on Newcastle's Alexander Isak in the first half of the match. The Netherlands centre-back initially refused to leave the field as he engaged in a heated exchange with the official.
Currently serving a one-match suspension, van Dijk's ban could potentially be extended based on the FA's charge. The charge pertains to his alleged use of abusive or insulting language towards the match official.
An FA statement read,
"Virgil van Dijk has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3.1 following Liverpool’s Premier League game against Newcastle United on Sunday, 27 August. It’s alleged that the defender acted in an improper manner and/or used abusive and/or insulting words towards a match official."
Van Dijk has until Friday to provide a response to the charge, and the outcome will determine whether his suspension will be further prolonged.
Liverpool's manager Jurgen Klopp criticized the red card decision immediately after the Newcastle game. While expressing disagreement with the call, Klopp acknowledged the limitations of his influence, stating,
"I don’t think it is a red card. There’s pretty much no contact, very little, but what can I say? The decision is like this and I cannot change it,”
