In a heart-wrenching incident, the recent floodwaters in Nkwele Awka, Awka South Local Government Area of Anambra State have claimed the lives of two young children. The victims, aged four and seven, tragically lost their lives in separate locations within the affected area.
The devastating incident occurred when one of the children was swept away by the swift current while attempting to dispose of refuse along the floodplain. Another child lost his life while trying to retrieve his slippers that had been carried away by the powerful floodwaters.
Local resident Ify recounted the harrowing incident, explaining that the young girl's mother had asked her to dispose of waste near the drainage. Tragically, as she was pouring the waste, a sudden slip caused her to fall into the drainage, and she was swiftly carried away by the relentless floodwaters.
Although the incident has not been officially reported to the state police command, Tochukwu Ikenga, the state police spokesman, acknowledged the tragedy as an environmental disaster. He emphasized the ongoing collaboration between law enforcement and the government to enhance safety measures throughout the state.
“This is pure environmental disaster but we keep working with the government to make sure safety is improved,” he said.
This heartbreaking incident serves as a stark reminder of the devastating impact that environmental challenges, such as flooding, can have on vulnerable communities.
