The Bauchi State Government has taken a decisive step by relieving the management of the Nigeria National League (NNL) club, Wikki Tourists football club, of their duties. This change was formalized through a letter dated August 8, which was signed by Danjuma Garba on behalf of the Secretary to the State Government.
The letter, directed to the club's chairman Balarabe Douglas and members of his management committee, firmly communicates the decision to sever their ties. The announcement came as a consequential action following the government's broader directive issued on May 25, 2023, regarding the disengagement of Political Office Holders within the state.
The contents of the letter assert, "I am directed to refer to the Government’s pronouncement of Thursday, 25th May, 2023 on the disengagement of Political Office Holders in the State. And to inform you that the disengagement order also affected your office as Chairman, Wikki Tourists Football Club and other members of the Management Team of the Club, hence, you cease to be the Management team of the Club."
Addressed to the Commissioner of Youth and Sports as well, the letter further outlines the immediate course of action. "Consequently, I am further directed to request you to hand-over the affairs of Wikki Tourists Football Club to the Ministry of Youth and Sports with immediate effect, pending the reconstitution of the Management of the Club."
The decision to replace the former chairman does not come as a surprise to many, as it was under his leadership that Wikki Tourists experienced relegation from the Nigeria Professional Football League (NPFL) to the NNL. Additionally, allegations of undue interference in coaching duties were levied against Douglas by at least three coaches who left the club amidst contentious circumstances.
This management shakeup underscores the commitment of the Bauchi State Government to instill positive changes and reinvigorate the trajectory of Wikki Tourists Football Club. The transition to a new phase brings with it the anticipation of fresh strategies and leadership that could potentially drive the club's resurgence.
