South-East Governors Agree to Name Second Niger Bridge After President Buhari, Indigenous Group Protests

Amidst mixed reactions from various groups, the South-East governors have agreed to name the much-awaited Second Niger Bridge after President Muhammadu Buhari. This announcement was made public by the President's Special Assistant on Digital Communications, Bashir Ahmad, in a tweet on Tuesday. He further stated that the bridge will be commissioned on the same day.

Bashir Ahmad:-

“The Second Niger Bridge is to officially be called/known as Buhari Second Niger Bridge. The Muhammadu Buhari Bridge is officially commissioned today, by President Muhammadu Buhari. #PMBLegacy.”

According to the President's Special Assistant on Digital/New Media, Tolu Ogunlesi, the decision to name the bridge after Buhari followed consultations with the governors. 

Tolu Ogunlesi:-

“Following consultations, the Governors of the South-East have agreed that the Second Niger Bridge shall be named the Muhammadu Buhari Second Niger Bridge,”

This news was not well-received by the Indigenous People of Biafra who rejected the idea of naming the bridge after the President, stating that he has completely ignored their plight since coming into power.

In a statement by Ipob Media and Publicity Secretary, Emma Powerful, on Monday, rejected naming of the bridge after Buhari.

“because he came to power and completely sidelined our people.”

However, the official commissioning of the Buhari Second Niger Bridge took place on Tuesday, marking another milestone in the development of Nigeria's infrastructure. Regardless of the criticisms that this decision has faced, it will undoubtedly serve as a testament to the legacy of President Buhari, as it stands to benefit generations to come.
