Police in Abuja arrested pro-Labour advocate, Nnamdi Chude, on Wednesday, due to a criminal defamation lawsuit by wealthy oil trader, Emeka Offor. Sources revealed to the Peoples Gazette that Mr Chude arrived at the police headquarters in the morning and was detained shortly thereafter.
Francis Obuzor, the lawyer for Mr Chude, announced that charges have been laid and he will appear in a magistrate court the following day. The Gazette checked in with Interpol and were told that the agency had nothing to do with the case and instead referred them to the Cybercrime Unit.
“He is not in our custody, this matter could be with the cybercrime unit but not our department at Interpol,” said Garba Umar, an assistant inspector-general of police, on Wednesday afternoon. “We have nothing to do with the case.”
The news of Chude's arrest has raised suspicions among those familiar with the situation. He was originally taken into custody on February 25 after posting a tweet about Offor that he was asked to apologize for and retract soon after his release. No clear explanation was given for why the billionaire businessman has opted to take the issue to court once again.
Offor did not make any comment on the issue when approached by the Gazette.
It is yet to be seen how the case will be settled and what the repercussions will be. The hearing is set to take place in Abuja, tomorrow morning.
