Godswill Akpabio, the former minister of Niger Delta affairs, has received an invitation from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission due to allegations of abuse of power and misappropriation of billions of Naira.
It is learnt from Akpabio's lawyer, Umeh Kalu, that Akpabio was asked to appear before the EFCC office on the 29th day of March, 2023.
Reports in 2021 alleged that Akpabio attempted to bribe the Chairman of the anti-graft agency, Abdulrasheed Bawa with $350,000 (N135 million) which led to his arrest. Sources further suggested that Akpabio's attempt to bribe was due to the many accusations of corruption dating back to his term as governor of Akwa Ibom State.
NetizenParrot has learnt that the Attorney General of the Federation, Abubakar Malami, personally set up the meeting between Akpabio and Bawa, and it was the call from Aso Villa to the EFCC Chairman that freed Akpabio and his aides.
It is to be recalled that there had been allegations of N40 billion fraud during Akpabio's term at the helm of the NDDC ministry which is being investigated by the Senate and House of Representatives.
Further, the EFCC is looking into the N86 billion contract scam that implicates the former Acting Managing Director of the NDDC, Prof. Kemebradikumo Pondei and the senator-elect.
The past has seen Akpabio arrested for alleged embezzlement of Akwa Ibom funds amounting to N108.1 billion.
It remains to be seen whether Godswill Akpabio will be held accountable for the multiple charges he is facing or will he be exonerated by the EFCC.
